India still slow to react to growing airport demand

India's airlines - and their international competitors - are expected to ramp up demands for better airport infrastructure as the total number of aircraft serving the country climbs steeply.
At last week’s Farnborough Air Show in the UK, Indian carriers alone placed about US$80 billion of orders, even knowing that major city airports such as Mumbai are without adequate landing slots and/or aircraft parking spaces.

In fact, India plans to invest only US$5 billion to improve airport infrastructure, compared to, say, China’s proposal for US$130 billion over 15 years.
Sanjiv Kapoor, chief commercial officer of Singapore Airlines unit Vistara has called the problem a huge issue. "You cannot have a commercial capital and a political capital that do not have slots available for growth,” he said.
The country has 450 airstrips and airports, but only 75 handle commercial airlines.
