Chandigarh: The much-touted flight connecting Chandigarh with the hot tourist destinations of Himachal Pradesh, including Kullu, Dharamshala and Shimla, has been grounded as the operators have closed down the service. The flight, which was launched on June 9 with much hype by an operator based in south India and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), has been closed down, despite availability of a huge number of passengers on the Kullu-Chandigarh route.
According to AAI, now a 20-seater special flight would be launched between Kullu-Chandigarh and Kullu-Delhi during winters from October. Highly placed sources in AAI confirmed to TOI that 'poor planning' by the operator and 'non-availability' of passengers between Kullu-Kangra and Kullu-Shimla was one of the reasons for the suspension of the flight. Sources also added that the operator had shifted its base to the southern part of the country, where it has got some contract of aerial survey, and that was another reason for shutting down this flight.
On June 9, Hyderabad-based IIC Technologies Ltd which had the air operator permit (AOP), had launched its nine-seater aircraft for these stations on the request of the airport authorities, but the operator closed down its operations within a month on July 10.
Confirming the closure of the flight, Bhuntar (Kullu) airport director, AN Sharma told TOI there was a huge response from passengers between Kullu and Chandigarh, but the operators failed to get an adequate number of passengers for other routes, including Kullu-Kangra and Kullu-Shimla.
