Ramanathapuram: In a swift move, the district police arrested a rape accused just a few minutes before he was to board a flight to Dubai at Anna International Airport in Chennai with the support of airport immigration officials.
R. Moorthy (21) of Vazhimarichan under Kamudhi police limits was about to flee to Dubai recently after the All Women Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) charging him with rape of a 19-year-old girl, when the police arrested him.
The accused, who had worked in Dubai, came to the village on vacation and allegedly raped the girl after promising her that he would marry her. When he decided to ditch her, the girl lodged a complaint with the police, after which Moorthy tried to flee using his passport and visa.
He had cleared security and immigration checks and was walking down to board the Dubai-bound flight when the immigration officials stopped him on an alert from the district police. After faxing the copy of the FIR, Superintendent of Police N. Manivannan spoke to the immigration officials and secured the arrest, the police said.
