Shorter runway impedes growth of Trichy international airport

Trichy: Despite its limited infrastructure like shorter runway length, the Trichy International Airport is one of the fastest growing international airports among tier-II cities in the country.
It has the shortest runway among the top 15 tier-II city airports in the country, at 8,136 feet. While the lenght of the runway at the Cochin airport is 11,155 feet, it is 11,808 feet in Ahmedabad and 10,007 in Vishakapatnam airports. Delhi has a 13,534-foot runway, while Amritsar has a runway length of 12,001 feet.
Citing shorter runway length, Air India Express, Air Asia, Tiger Airways, Sri Lankan Air and Malindo Air operate only small-bodied aircraft like Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, which can take off with a maximum weight of 63 tonnes to 77 tonnes from the Trichy airport. If the weight exceeds this, landing would be risky, an official at the airport said.
Once it gets the entire required infrastructure, the Trichy airport will emerge as the top-most among airports in tier-two cities, observed H Ubaidullah, an independent analyst, who has done research on Indian airports.
Of the 510 acres sought for expansion of the airport, 164 acres belongs to the defence department. About 40 acres comes under the government poromboke category and the rest belongs to private parties.
