Kolkata: How vulnerable in the Kolkata airport to a terror strike similar to the one that occurred at Ataturk Airport in Turkey on June 28? Ever since the attack, that claimed 44 lives and injured scores of others, the ministry of home affairs (MHA) had been mulling an exercise in Kolkata for better co-ordination between security agencies. Friday's terror strike in Dhaka spurred officials into action and the drill was held on Monday.
"It was a realistic exercise involving hostage rescue and other aspects such as bomb detection. The CISF, which is in charge of security at Indian airports, was the first agency to receive information of the crisis. The state police swung into action. Finally, NSG commandos from the hub at Badu in Madhyamgram, were deployed to neutralise the terrorists and rescue hostages. The drill was conducted within the passenger concourse and around the airport," an officer said.
The dog squad of the NSG also participated in the exercise and sniffed out explosives. According to the source, the exercise was conducted keeping in mind the trends adopted by terrorists.
