Air India, Army join hands to upgrade Pantnagar airport

Pantnagar:  National passenger carrier Air India and the Indian Army have decided to jointly develop the only civil airport of Kumaon region at Pantnagar, which has been ignored by various governments till now.
Different chief ministers have previously announced to upgrade the Pantnagar airport. However, no appropriate step was taken in this regard. Airport expansion plans have been underway for the past two years but there has been no work on the ground.
Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Pantnagar, A P Vajpayee, told TOI that Air India officials did a survey and have sought 571 acres of additional land for the expansion of the airport. Administration has taken over a part of Sanjay Colony in Pantnagar for the purpose.
However, the land towards Terai Development Corporation (TDC) and seed dispersal centre at Haldi, which belongs to GB Pant University and forest department, could not be acquired.
