Coimbatore: Chinniampalayam saw some drama on Tuesday morning when around 40 residents gathered at the entry point of the area and refused to allow district administration officials to measure the structures in their area.
The tahsildars in charge of land acquisition for the expansion of the airport had issued notices to many residents of Chinniampalayam and Poonga Nagar to have their structures measured. The land owners said they would allow their buildings to be measured only after the land prices were fixed.
Close to 300 residents of Chinniampalayam and G K R Nagar erected a shamiana on Mill Road and refused to allow the revenue inspectors and tahsildars enter their area. While the total number of houses issued notices for structural evaluation was not clear, land owners confirmed that at least 25 of them received notices on Thursday and Friday. "Under the land acquisition rule, it is clear that land prices have to be fixed before our structures were evaluated," said a land owner at Chinniampalayam, Vijay Vikraman. "We had informed the collectorate officials only last week, including the tahsildars and divisional revenue officers in charge that we were not happy with the price offered and that we don't want our structures to be evaluated at this juncture," said Vikaraman.
"That was why we gheraoed them in G K R Nagar. They however managed to evaluate 10 structures close to the airport compound wall," he said.
