New Delhi: The ultra-sensitive airports in Delhi and Mumbai may be sitting ducks for terror attacks due to glaring chinks in their armour. A parliamentary panel has red-flagged the slums around Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) and the hotel district at Delhi's IGI Airport.
At Delhi's IGI, the panel has identified the hotel district near the main runway, called Aerocity, as a "potential security threat to the runway and the airport".
"Access to hotels inside the Aerocity is being managed by private security guards. Security at these hotels should be given utmost importance because unknown persons are accessing such points. Considering the strategic importance of the hotels that are so close to a functional runway, the committee recommends that CISF be the default security agency for all the access points to hotels in Aerocity .... Since hotels are a separate business, payment for CISF deployment may be borne by hotels themselves," a parliamentary standing committee on transport, tourism and culture report tabled in both Houses of Parliament on Wednesday said.
Interestingly, the issue of rent and electricity charges paid by Delhi Police to GMR-run Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL) for area occupied by them also proved to be a contentious issue. While the government's agreement with GMR Group says that all government agencies have to pay these charges, the panel pointed out that Delhi Police is discharging a "sovereign function and should not be charged for basic facilities provided to them".
