Jewellery worth Rs 3 crore seized at airport

Kochi: On Saturday, customs officials seized diamond-studded gold jewellery worth Rs 3.19 crore from two passengers who landed at the Cochin international airport on an Air-India flight from Mumbai. The passengers, natives of Gujarat and Maharashtra, had kept the jewellery in their hand baggage, said the customs official. The customs sleuths intercepted them after finding suspicious contents in their baggage during scanning. The accused claimed that they had brought the ornaments as samples for jewellery shops in the state, said the official. The duo however failed to produce relevant consignment documents.
Meanwhile, officials said that the ornaments were brought in such a manner to evade sales tax. Customs officials handed over the seized jewellery to commercial taxes (intelligence) department for further investigation.
