Malappuram: The long-pending process of land acquisition for the development of Karipur International Airport is to be to be commenced soon. A meeting regarding the land acquisition held at Malappuram on Tuesday has decided to start the process of acquiring land from 100 persons, in the coming days.
Amidst the strong protests from the part of the representatives of local-level action council in Karipur, which is on warpath against the land acquisition, the meeting has decided to go ahead with the acquisition and the local affairs minister K T Jaleel who attended the meeting has informed that a technical advisory committee would be formed to study the environmental impact of development works. But the meeting witnessed dramatic scenes when the protesters raising slogans demanded to start the acquisition process only after completing the study on impact of development works filling acres of land.
Minister has informed that the government has already earmarked Rs 1,463 crore for the land acquisition and priority would be given to the rehabilitation of the families which would be evicted for the development project. A compensation amount of Rs 3-10 lakh would be distributed to those who have agreed to give their land and the amount would be handed over to the owners at the time of registration. The special compensation package is applicable to those who will lose their houses.
