Non-metro airports may get yet another facelift

Of the 35 non-metro airports that underwent modernisation during 2006-2011 at an expense of around Rs.12,500 crore, many may have to be redeveloped as they have exceeded their design capacity.
All these airports are run by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
In engineering terms, design capacity refers to the optimum capacity that a facility has been designed for while effective capacity means its actual capacity that often exceeds the design capacity.
This comes in the backdrop of the National Democratic Alliance government working on framing a roadmap for the regional connectivity scheme (RCS), an ambitious project that aims to connect remote areas by operationalising unserved and underserved airports.
A senior AAI official, requesting anonymity, said the agency is currently working on identifying a number of problems concerning traffic capacity and operational issues at the 35 non-metro airports and it will submit the report to the ministry of civil aviation shortly.
The official pointed out that most of the airports needing an upgrade may have to extend their runways and airport terminals, and also expand their boundaries, in order to accommodate the rising number of air travellers.
A second AAI official, who also did not want to be named, said some of the airports needing the upgrade include Jammu, Amritsar, Ahmedabad, Pune, Goa, Guwahati, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram, among others.
