Shirdi, Ozar airports on clash course

Nashik: The fast pace of work to develop an airport at Shirdi, barely 80km from Nashik, has upset industrial associations here who have been demanding commencement of air service from the existing airport at Ozar.
Industrial associations have decided to take up the issue with the Centre and state government. They claimed that there is no need to develop an airport at Shirdi when the Ozar airport is ready for take-off. The state government has spent Rs 84 crore to build airport terminal at Ozar, which was inaugurated in March 2015.
Mangesh Patankar, vice-president, Nashik Industries & Manufacturers' Association (NIMA), said, "The state government and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd have built an international level airport terminal at Ozar. The state government has spent Rs 84 crore to construct airport, but the air service is yet to take off. At the same time, the government is constructing a new airport at Shirdi."
He added, "Most tourists go to Shirdi via Trimbakeshwar and Nashik. Hence, there was no need to develop another airport near Shirdi, when Nashik's airport was ready and waiting to take off."
Patankar said they will meet civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathy Raju and urge him to commence air service from Nashik at the earliest. Moreover, they will also meet chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on the issue.
"Alliance Air of Air India had decided to commence Mumbai-Nashik flight recently, but it could not work out as the Mumbai airport terminal operator GVK refused to give time slot for the proposed flight. Nashik has been sidelined politically. Now, the government is developing Shirdi airport on war footing and ignoring Nashik's airport. We want the government to take initiatives to commence air service from Ozar airport," said Rajendra Ahire, president, Ambad Industries & Manufacturers' Association.
