Tech holes in plane search

New Delhi: Searchers are struggling to locate the Antonov-32 that disappeared with 29 people on board on July 22 because it lacked the equipment to transmit electronic distress signals under water, air force sources admitted today.

The more modern aircraft in the air force's fleet are better equipped with emergency locator transmitters or beacons that are activated either manually or automatically if the aircraft is in danger of going under water.

Air force sources confirmed that search parties had been sent to tribal villages near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh after reported sightings of some unusual objects. The search has not yielded anything so far.

The An-32 was not equipped with all the emergency measures because its primary responsibility involves flying over land, not water, an officer said.

On July 22, it was flying across the Bay of Bengal as part of a weekly "courier" service the air force runs between Chennai and Port Blair in the Andamans.

The air force is in the process of equipping its entire An-32 fleet with underwater emergency locator transmitters. A certain number of these transmitters have been imported and will now be fitted on An-32 aircraft that fly over the sea.
