Why Does Shah Rukh Khan Keep Getting Detained by U.S. Immigration?

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has been detained once again while trying to enter the U.S.

He is one of the world’s biggest movie stars, not a criminal or a terrorist but his name apparently sets off alarm bells for U.S. immigration which keeps making the mistake of holding him for questions as he tries to enter the country.

He got delayed again on Friday, he said in a tweet.

“I fully understand & respect security with the way the world is, but to be detained at US immigration every damn time really really sucks,” Mr. Khan wrote on his verified Twitter account.

Nisha Biswal, assistant secretary at the U.S. Bureau of South and Central Asian affairs, tweeted to Mr. Khan to apologize.

“Sorry for the hassle at the airport, @iamsrk – even American diplomats get pulled for extra screening!”
U.S. Ambassador to India Richard Verma later wrote on Twitter: “Sorry for the trouble at LAX @iamsrk. We are working to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Your work inspires millions, including in the US.”

Mr. Khan replied to Mr. Verma’s message, saying: “No trouble sir, respect the protocol & not expecting 2 b above it. It’s just a tad inconvenient. Thx for ur concern.”

A spokesman at the U.S. embassy in New Delhi said he couldn’t comment for privacy reasons. A spokesman for India’s Ministry of External Affairs didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

It is at least the fourth time Mr. Khan has said he has been stopped at U.S. immigration. In April 2012 he was held for questioning for around two hours at New York’s White Plains airport.
