Air India Pilot submits fake health certificates to fly, grounded

New Delhi: In perhaps the first 'fraud' of its kind, an Air India pilot has been grounded for allegedly giving false health certificates to operate flights.
After his medical examination, the south India-based AI commander was asked to get more tests conducted. "Instead of doing that, he went to Bengaluru and got a health certificate from some private doctor. He submitted this document and kept operating flights. As soon as his fraud was detected, we grounded him. This is the first time we have seen such a thing," said a senior official.
India follows the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) guidelines which require every commercial pilot to undergo medical check every year.
Commanders and other pilots above 40 have to undergo medical tests twice a year. The airline has viewed the pilot's act very seriously and could forward the case to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Pilots need to undergo regular medical tests and only those found fit are allowed to operate flights. The tests are conducted only at Indian Air Force centres or a few big hospitals cleared to do the same by the DGCA.
