Airline fares on a low swoop to attract travellers

Chennai: Customised holidays that offer value for money to international and domestic travellers seem to be the in thing this holiday season. Low fares and additional flights have made several Chennaiites drop a trip home this Puja or Diwali and opt for a holiday in Bali, Mauritius, Cambodia and other such destinations. Goa, Manali, Himachal Pradesh, and Eastern Himalayas are popular in the domestic circuit.
Traditionally, people prefer travelling home to be with family and relatives during Puja and Diwali, but booking trends show that an increasing number of families are opting for international getaways. The travel flow pattern remains the same though with first-time travellers opting for south-east Asian countries and seasoned back-packers looking at Europe and emerging destinations like Vietnam and Bali.
Travelling domestic for holidays to meet family and friends is a hassle as air fares go up and trains run full. This is slowly beginning to bring in a change in travel pattern, especially among the young families. SOTC head, sales, India and NRI markets, Daniel D'Souza said, "Travellers are looking at value-driven holidays. Substantial number of travellers is opting for customised holidays with an average travel period of six days to seven nights.
Airlines and online ticketing portals have started seeing a rise in bookings. A source in Cox and Kings said, "Families who live in metro cities have started holidaying twice a year. They go to their hometowns and spend time with families and then they also travel abroad or to some domestic destination the same year. They want different experiences. It is affordable to travel now."
