Chennai: Health officials in Singapore have identified 13 Indians out of a total of 115 people who have tested positive for zika virus.
Zika, a mosquito-borne disease, is spreading rapidly in Singapore with more than 100 people testing positive within a matter of a few days. With high frequency of flights operating between Chennai and Singapore, officials fear the spread of the disease in the city.
Following this, the Chennai airport authorities have tightened the mechanism to check the spread of the disease.
The officials have allotted a functional health post for passengers to make use of for identifying the state of their health with respect to zika virus.
An official at Chennai airport has said all officials have received directions from the airport health division to educate people about the disease. In addition to monitoring people coming from zika-affected countries, the organisation is creating awareness about the spread of the disease to people travelling abroad.
The airport authorities, with support from the State health officials, have been carrying out fogging activities on the premises to prevent the spread of the disease.
