Nashik has potential to be aviation hub: IAF

Nashik: Claiming that the Indian Air Force (IAF) has achieved 96% and over 50% indigenization in manufacturing MiG and Sukhoi spares, respectively, group captain P K Anand, the station commander of 11 Base Repair Depot, IAF, Ozar, said the local industry had a major role to play in this accomplishment.
He further said that Nashik was racing towards achieving the aviation hub status.
The base repair depot (BRD) undertakes maintenance of fixed wings fighter aircraft brought from Russia. The major challenge was to get quality spares, which had to be procured from Russia. The BRD, in turn, through reverse engineering, undertook the indigenization process. It sought help from local vendors in Nashik, who rose to the standards to provide the quality products for the aircraft.
"Lack of ready availability of spares from original equipment manufacturers (OEM) in case of MiG aircraft forced us to change our strategy and opt for indigenous manufacturing instead of waiting for imported products that could be costlier too. Today, the local industry is supporting the IAF, leading it to become an aviation hub," Anand said.
