A new airport on the anvil ground report - 3-year deadline too tough to meet

Aviation analysts spelt out a slew of measures to make the proposed airport at Purandar a truly international facility, casting a shadow on its completion within three years.

The long wish list includes transit hotels, road and rail speedway access, shuttle service, business and communication centre, helicopter and private aircraft bay and air cargo facility for agro products to ensure an easy access to the state's agricultural belt, including Kolhapur and Solapur.

Dhairyashil Vandekar, an aviation expert and analyst, told TOI the greenfield airport for Pune airport should not only be architecturally finest in this part of the country. It should meet the aspirations and requirements of Pune and its surrounding areas for at least the next three decades. "The airport must have multiple accesses through different speedways like the expressway and rail link, providing shuttle services to the city and other important locations," Vandekar said.

He said apart from having essential modern aviation infrastructure and a cargo complex, it must have facilities like transit hotels, business and communication centres and 24-hour intensive medical care. "The government can also start an aviation training academy here.Importantly , as a business hub, it must have facilities to hold international trade fairs, conferences and exhibitions," he said.

Vandekar said ideally , the new airport should be selfsufficient for its power requirements by making use of solar energy . This can be achieved by installing solar power plants.
