A range of key announcements, including upgradation of city airport and development of tourist circuit covering Mhaismal and Shulibhanjan at the cost of Rs 453 crore, were made during the cabinet meeting held here on Tuesday.
The cabinet meet also resolved to recommend Aurangabad for the Centre's Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) and its inclusion in Unesco's World Heritage City Programme. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said the cabinet put its stamp on the city as the place for setting up the irrigation commissionerate and the state-of-the-art transport hub.
The CM said only 12 cities in the country have covered under the HRIDAY scheme so far. "We will be sending a formal proposal to the Centre shortly. With this, Aurangabad will not only have the tag of Smart City, but it will also be covered under HRIDAY," Fadnavis said.
Elaborating upon other plans to improve Aurangabad airport, he said, "The runway of the Aurangabad airport would be widened to make it on a par with international standards. After the Airport Authority of India refused to bear the expenditure required for the widening the runway, the government has decided to pay for the same."
Nanded airport will also get a makeover and is going to be considered for government plans to improve the regional air connectivity. The state cabinet has allocated Rs 250 crore for development of both airports.
