In an effort to roadblock and negate the state government proposal to construct the steel bridge between Chalukya Circle and Hebbal, which has been justified due to heavy traffic moving towards the airport, the BJP has decided to actively pursue the opening of the alternative route to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA).
This route will assist people from east and southeast parts of the city, including Whitefield, Indiranagar, Koramangala etc, to directly approach the airport via Devanahalli and Bagalur. The state cabinet had sanctioned close to Rs 21.8 crore for the construction of the alternative route, in October 2015.
Taking the lead, Bangalore North constituency MP and central minister DV Sadananda Gowda has decided to call for a "high level" meeting of Bengaluru's civic agency heads, the Bengaluru deputy commissioner and even the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
"The alternative route to KIA via Bagalur has been in the pipeline for a long time. Barring the issue regarding toll collection, the project seems feasible. If opened, traffic along the Hebbal route will be halved, and there will be no need of the steel bridge," argued Gowda, speaking to TOI.
He said the meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, however, due to the festive season, it will now happen in the next 10 days.
Gowda said as many as 200 taxi drivers had even approached him to discuss the alternative route to ensure speedier access to KIA. "We will get traffic flow on the Hebbal route assessed and the exact number of vehicles which may access KIA from the alternative route before arriving at any decision," he said.
