Early morning fog rolling in over the runway at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) saw an international flight from the Middle East being diverted to Calicut on Wednesday. Flight number IX886, scheduled to land in Mangaluru at 3.50am from Damman, only arrived at MIA at 9am. The incident followed the diversion of flight IX814 from Dubai, which was diverted on Tuesday, owing to fog.
Aircraft diverted at Mangaluru, owing to poor visibility, are directed towards Kochi, Bengaluru or Calicut. On Tuesday, the flight from Dubai, which was scheduled to arrive at MIA at 4.45am landed at 7.45am. MIA airport director JT Radhakrishna told TOI that diversion of flights was a recurring problem, annually, during this season. "The airport has faced problems because of fog in October in the past. The end of monsoon and the commencement of winter season produce conditions favourable for fog," he said.
