High alert at airports, extra check of baggage

New Delhi: Airports across India, and particularly in the metropolises and in northern and western India, have been put on high alert as part of heightened security arrangements after the Indian Army’s “surgical strikes” across the LoC. The intelligence agencies have warned the government that Pakistan-based terror groups may try to carry out a big strike to grab global attention and put the government on the defensive.
Specific warnings have been issued for 24 airports, that include New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru, and many airports in Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan and J&K. These airports have been sent detailed warnings and many high-security measures are being implemented.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has also written to the police chiefs of each state, as well as the CISF, the paramilitary force that guards airports, and to Air India and private airlines, alerting them on the security threat. A series of security measures, including random baggage checks, physical checks of hand baggage after the x-ray, enhanced vigil at cargo terminals, truck docks and car parking checks will be undertaken. Counter-sabotage teams, bomb squads and commando teams have been asked to be extra-vigilant.
