Scare on Air India’s London-bound flight as cockpit windscreen cracks mid-air

A London bound Air India flight returned after being airborne for an hour as the cockpit wind screen shattered midair on Tuesday. The aircraft made an emergency landing within an hour of departure.
Though these incidents of cracked aircraft windshields are not rare, but this one necessitated a probe by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). After routine checks, loading of baggage and passengers, the three- year- old aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner registered as VT-ANN aircraft had departed for London at around 8.10am.
However, soon after departure, there was a loud sound, following which the windshield cracked. "The pilots immediately decided to turn back to Mumbai. The Air Traffic Control (ATC) was informed immediately. Within an hour, the aircraft made a landing after which the passengers were taken to the terminal building before being accommodated another aircraft," said sources.
