In the wake of the festive season and with NRI season just round the corner, 15 new flights were introduced to and from the city airport to handle the rush of fliers. This was part of the new winter schedule, announced by the director general of civil aviation last week. The 15 new flights include those arriving from and headed to five major destinations including Goa, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Pune.
Low-cost carrier, SpiceJet announced three new flights from the city, to Goa, Bangalore and Chennai. "After May this year, the runway was closed for maintenance between 10am and 6pm. However, the work was completed before schedule and flight operations have resumed leading to the inclusion of new flights," said A K Sharma, director, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
The new flights bring the number of flight to and from the city airport to 150, from 135 flights earlier.
Similarly, Indigo airlines introduced three new flights to cater to the festival rush and these will be operational from November 12. "The airline is currently operating 23 direct flights from Ahmedabad to destinations such as Mumbai, Delhi, Goa, Lucknow, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata. Two flights will operate between Ahmedabad and Chennai while one will fly to Lucknow," confirmed an airline official.
