3 arrested after car rams into airport barricades

Chandigarh: Three people, including a woman, were arrested on Sunday evening after their car crashed through barricades at the highly fortified Chandigarh International Airport and reached the arrival area. Police said the driver of the car was under the influence of alcohol.
Police said the car driver, who was accompanied by two people, did not stop even after police, deployed in the outer area of the airport, tried to stop them. It was the first security checkpoint that the accused ignored before entering the airport premises, which was closed on Sunday as there were no flights since afternoon due to the repair of the runway.
According to the police, the incident happened around 7 pm on Sunday evening. Police chased and arrested them near the arrival area of the airport. Those arrested have been identified as Sumeet Saini, a Sector 30 resident of Chandigarh, Trikha Kalsi and Sonu Singla, also residents of Chandigarh. Police said Saini, the driver, was driving under the influence when he rammed his car into the barricades.
“We have arrested all the three people and produced them in court today,” said Inspector H S Bal, SHO Chandigarh Airport, adding that the accused also misbehaved with the police.
