Flying from Bihta to be less expensive than Patna: AAI

Patna: It will be cheaper than Patna airport to fly from Bihta airbase once commercial flight operation begins after construction of the proposed civil enclave there, said Rajendra Singh Lahauria, director of Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport (JPNI) in the city. However, he is not sure whether international flights will also operate from Bihta or not as it depends on the airline operators. As of now, no international flight operates from Patna airport. If everything goes as per the plan, the Bihta civil enclave is likely to be ready by 2019 end.
"Airfare at Patna airport is comparatively higher as flights are normally required to operate with load penalty, wherein they have to leave a few seats vacant. However, load penalty will not be applicable at Bihta airbase due to longer length of its runway. This will translate into lower airfare," Lahauria said.
Airfare is ascertained as per demand-supply factor. Fewer seats result in higher ticket prices. The airport director claimed since Bihta is located 25 nautical miles before Patna airport on Delhi-Patna route, it would also be a factor responsible for lower airfare.
