Skyrocketing air fares -called dynamic pricing structure by airlines -have wreaked havoc on the holiday plans of revellers from Pune.
Suraj Dhandekar, a working professional, had planned a family vacation to Goa to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. "It was a spurof-the-moment plan. But I was completely shocked when I checked the ticket prices. The fare per person on all days from December 11 was more than Rs10,000!" he said.
"Mine is a family of three, including a teenaged son and one-way fares were adding up to more than Rs30,000. It was impossible for me to pay such a high amount, so we cancelled the trip. I have no clue why the fares are so very high," Suraj, presently visiting his in-laws in Kolkata, told TOI.
Mantosh Biswas had a similar experience when he planned to visit Agra with his family , to see the Taj Mahal in the last week of this month.Finding the fares too high, he scrapped the plan.
"On December 18, the website showed the air fares at a whopping Rs47,845. On other days too the one-way fare for one person was at least Rs10,000 on average. Flights from Pune to Delhi were economical, but my destination was Agra and not the national capital," Biswas said.
For Vinu Abraham, who had to go to his hometown in Kerala for an emergency , air travel was the onlyu option. "I need to go home on December 22 on an emergency , and need to report back to my workplace here after two days. The fares were almost touching Rs22,000. I seldom use my credit card but had to do it as I was left with no other option," he said, "Now, I have an added burden to pay back.Trains are good but take up a lot of time. They also get delayed frequently . I would still have taken a train but I didn't get any leaves."
