Airfares to and from Chennai skyrocket

Flying in and out of Chennai meant blowing a big hole in passengers' pockets as almost all airlines hiked airfares to and from the cyclone-struck city when the airport there reopened early on Tuesday morning. Delhi-Chennai one-way fare on a non-stop flight for Tuesday was as high as Rs 30,000 on a low cost carrier (LCC) and Rs 31,200 on a full service carrier (FSC).
Chennai Airport was shut down on Monday afternoon when cyclone Vardah had hit the city and it reopened at 4.45 am on Tuesday. As a result, hundreds of passengers were stranded and airlines waived off their rebooking charges .
However, spot fares on Tuesday were a shocker when flights resumed. "Air fares have skyrocketed to more than 100% due to cyclone Vardah. The impact on other modes of transport has led to this sudden rise and until the state sees normalcy, we will find fares higher than normal for Chennai," said travel portal Yatra chief Sharat Dhall.
For LCCs, the highest one-way fare of Rs 29,143 on Delhi-Chennai route was on SpiceJet's 3 pm flight.
