J&K HC raps AAI for poor facilities at Srinagar Airport

Srinagar: Taking cognizance of the failure of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in upgrading the Srinagar Airport, the J&K High Court today directed the authorities to take immediate steps to mitigate the sufferings of the passengers.

“The respondent authorities shall take immediate steps for providing all necessary facilities to the passengers travelling to and from Kashmir by air,” directed the court.

It further directed that whatever steps are required to be taken for providing the facilities to the passengers and ensuring their smooth travel shall be taken forthwith.

The court sought compliance reports from the respondents before next date of hearing.

The Chief Justice of J&K High Court has meanwhile observed that the issue, taken cognizance of by Justice A M Magrey, is of great public importance and directed that it be registered as suo moto Public Interest Litigation and listed before the division bench.

The court noticed that the AAI has, prima facie, failed to take notice of the hardships and difficulties being regularly faced by the people who travel to and from Kashmir by air.

It also noticed that the AAI has, prima facie, failed to take appropriate remedial measures by upgrading the lighting system and installing the required gadgets at Srinagar Airport and, consequently, has failed to discharge its public duty.
