Kochi-bound fliers stranded at airport

Passengers flying to Kochi on Tuesday morning were in for a rude shock after the airline cancelled their flight. The 9.20 am Ahmedabad-Mumbai-Kochi flight, however, did depart for Mumbai but left behind a bevy of Kochi-bound travellers stating technical reasons. The stranded passengers have alleged that the airline preferred a group of foreigners who paid higher fare and left behind those who booked the tickets in advance. Dr Nilesh Acharya (57), an orthopaedic surgeon based in Himmatnagar reached the airport on Tuesday morning with his wife to board the Kochi flight as he had to attend an annual conference.

However, his Indigo flight 6E 214 (Ahmedabad-Mumbai- Kochi) scheduled for departure at 9.20 am was cancelled. “We started at 7 in morning from Himmatnagar to catch the fight. The moment we reached the check-in counter we were told that the flight has been cancelled due to technical reasons. They did not even make any alternative arrangement for us. To our surprise the flight took off on time from Ahmedabad to Mumbai. The Indigo ground staff at the airport was not at all co-operative and quite rude. After about 7 hours of heated arguments they said they will book us a bus ticket from Ahmedabad to Mumbai to catch the connecting flight from Mumbai to Kochi on Wednesday,” Acharya said.

However, when the stranded passengers reached the Volvo bus operator at Jodhpur they were informed that the airline had not purchased their bus tickets. Again after much heated arguments the airline finally confirmed at 8 pm that they will book the bus tickets on behest of the stranded passengers. Acharya was joined by 16 doctors from North Gujarat who were travelling to Kochi to attend the same conference. In all there were 61 passengers booked tickets from Ahmedabad to Kochi in the same flight.
