Money mule with Rs 28L grounded at international airport

The air intelligence unit (AIU) of the Customs arrested a man, Ashraf Veettil (30), carrying Rs 28 lakh on Thursday. The cash belonged to the man's handler identified as Siddhique.
Customs officials set a trap to catch Siddhique and instructed Ashraf to ask his handler come to the airport. However sensing trouble, Siddhique changed his mind at the last minute. The Customs officials released the carrier on conditional bail after recording his statement and questioned him about Siddhique and his associates.
Ashraf, who was flying to Dubai, had hidden the currency in his clothes contained in his checked-in baggage. He had also placed toys, cooking utensils and foodgrain along with the clothes to mislead the Customs. At the airport, officials intercepted Ashraf after they grew suspicious. They found his replies unsatisfactory and checked his baggage in which they found Rs 28 lakh in notes of Rs 2,000. Ashraf told them he was transporting the money on behalf of Siddhique and that he had been promised Rs 20,000 as his "commission" along with the return airfare.
