Portable ATCs to keep small airports humming

The 400-odd airports which will be thrown open for regional connectivity may probably fly on India's age-old, much-chronicled system - jugaad.

The Central government, in order to keep a guard on its expenditure for the project, has decided to use portable Air Traffic Control (ATC) equipment as against setting up a permanent ATC towers.

The move will be more cost efficient as such equipment takes hardly any time to set up. And in case services do not successfully take off at any given airport, dismantling and folding up the ATCs can be done as easily.

The cost of each portable ATC is around Rs 7 crore. In contrast, the construction cost of setting up a permanent ATC structure is exorbitant. The ATC in Mumbai, which was opened a couple of years ago and is the tallest in the country, was built at a cost of Rs 110 crore, with the tower having modern equipment worth Rs 35 crore.

"These portable air traffic control (ATC) set-ups have many advantages, and at the same time, come at a reasonable price. We plan to use them at these airports so that the operations can be started quickly," P K Bandopadhyay, executive director, CNS (planning) told DNA money on the sidelines of an annual event Disha held in New Delhi.
