Proposed airport to be cargo hub, says MADC

The new Pune airport, which is set to come up at Purandar, will serve as a cargo hub for the state, senior officials at the Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited (MADC) said recently.
Vishwas M Patil, the vice chairman and managing director of the MADC, told TOI that the plans for the new airport included the setting up of a separate section meant for full-fledged cargo movements.
"Though the detailed project report (DPR) is still to be made, we have plans to make the new Pune airport a cargo hub of the state. There are many farmers in areas like Satara, Pune who, apart from other crops, cultivate fruits like grapes and pomegranate. With the new airport and the state-of-the-art cargo, their crops can be easily transported to other states. Maharashtra, at present, doesn't have a good cargo network," Patil told TOI.
