Self bag-drop facility started at Mum airport

Mumbai’s airport on Sunday started the self bag-drop facility, for which it has deployed weighingand- tagging units at the airport, allowing passengers who have already checked in online to quickly tag and drop their baggage before heading directly to the boarding gate. The facility – now available only for Air India, Jet Airways, Spice Jet, Go Air and Indigo passengers – makes the baggage check-in process easier. “In less than five minutes of entering T2, I was past security check. My flight was departing early morning and it saved me so much precious time,” said Rahul Johri who took a 5.15 am Jet Airways flight to Aurangabad.
The easy-to-handle self-service counters, which will have an attendant placed for help, will weigh the bags and slap the requisite identification, before sending them off for loading to the intended aircraft. “Passengers don’t have to stand in long queues tugging their heavy luggage bags. They can just drop their baggage at these counters and head directly to the gate, provided they have already checked in online,” a Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) spokesperson said.
According to officials, the new measure will help increase terminal capacity, reduce operating costs for airlines and result in shorter boarding queues, all of which would add to a better flying experience. For airlines, the technology helps cut down on the manpower placed at individual baggage counters. “Being a seasoned traveller, it immensely helped me in offloading my bags quicker and without any help from the airport staff who could focus on those who need help,” said Alok Joshi, who flew Air India to Delhi.
