Airlines say no-no, GAGAN to be used in disaster mgmt

Even as the aviation regulator’s warnings to airline operators for adopting indigenously developed GPS-Aided Geo Augmented Navigation System (GAGAN) for aircraft tracking fails to find even a single taker, airports authority has decided to extend the technology’s use for disaster management.

According to Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials, GAGAN will also be used for purposes that come under the Disaster Management Support Programme (DMSP). Under this, it will be used for disaster management, monitoring of tides, waves and surveillance services.

“Geostationary satellites, low orbiting earth observation satellites, aerial survey systems together with ground infrastructure already form the core element of the observation systems for disaster management, covering floods, cyclone, agricultural drought, forest fire, landslides and earthquakes. This will make it stronger,” officials said.

Though mandated by the national civil aviation policy framed in June 2016, none of the 130 domestic aircrafts purchased in the past two years (2014-2016) have been fitted with equipment needed to be GAGAN ready.
