Airport to remain closed for 7 hours a day

Thiruvananthapuram: The international airport here will remain closed for over seven hours during daytime from Monday for three months for the third and final phase of the Rs. 56 crore re-carpeting of the 3,377-metre runway.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already secured NOTAM (Notice for Airmen World Over) to complete the re-carpeting and to alert the airlines world over that Thiruvananthapuram International Airport and the airfield will not be available for flight operations from 10.30 a.m. to 5.15 p.m. from January 2 to March 31.
The airlines operating domestic and international flights to and from the airport during the seven-hour period from 10.30 a.m. had already rescheduled their flights on the request of the AAI.

Airport Director George G. Tharakan told The Hindu that the work on 1,856 m of the critical portion of the runway would be taken up phase by phase during the period. As work on the centre of the runway was being taken up, flights would not be able to land during the closure of airfield.

The AAI had completed the Phase I work by securing NOTAM from October 1 to 31 and for Phase II work from November 1 to December 31, 2016.
