FIR against Bharat Forge after liquor bottles found on its jet

In a possible first, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has filed an FIR against a leading Indian corporate group allegedly following the recovery of a large number of liquor bottles from its business jet after a domestic flight. DGCA filed the police complaint against Pune-based Bharat Forge, the world's largest forging company that is into verticals like automotive, power, oil and gas, construction and mining.

"We filed the police complaint to send a stern message to private plane and charter operators that the regulator has a zero tolerance policy on this issue," a senior DGCA official said. Despite repeated attempts, Bharat Forge did not comment on the issue.

DGCA had found close to 50 bottles on the company's luxury Bombardier Global Express aircraft when it flew from Pune to Delhi -- a domestic sector flight in which serving or storing of liquor is not allowed -- last week. DGCA had enhanced surveillance of private planes and charters ever since it realized such planes were used to ferry demonetised currency notes from small airfields which lack proper security checks. The checks will now continue in the run-up to the assembly polls in states like UP and Punjab where charter planes and helicopters will be used extensively for campaigning.
