The Kerala Pradesh Pravasi Congress has decried the “unreasonable” fee being charged by Air India for flying home the bodies of NRIs who die in the Gulf countries.
K.K. Seethy, president of the Kozhikode unit of the Pravasi Congress, said that Air India was charging a baggage charge of Rs. 350 a kg for dead bodies from the Gulf.
“This is an atrocious exploitation of the dead,” Mr. Seethy said. Since several lakh Keralites worked in the Gulf countries, hundreds died each month.
The Pravasi Congress, affiliated to the Congress party, is holding a march to the Air India office here on Tuesday to protest against the “exploitation of the dead.”
Mr. Seethy said the huge majority of the NRIs in the Gulf were manual workers and low-wage employees with hardly any savings. Very often, friends and families had to raise funds from contributions from other Keralite Non Residents Indians to meet the airfare of the dead bodies.
