Aviation min pulls up AAI over delays in night-landing at Juhu

Mumbai: In a major boost for Juhu aerodrome’s operations, the government has fast-tracked plans to equip the airport with night landing facilities after the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) got civil aviation minister Jayant Sinha to intervene in the matter.

According to sources, the minister gave a definitive push for the plan in a meeting he convened with officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and ONGC in attendance, on Tuesday. This was followed by a second meeting between officials of the ONGC, AAI and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), on Wednesday giving further push to Juhu’s operational capability.

“A survey has been ordered and it will be completed in a week’s time. Since the area is prone to water-logging, the height of the runway has to be increased before we install the lights. There were delays in implementation on the part of AAI but we have taken the matter on priority basis now. The whole process should be finished within a few months,” said an AAI official.

Besides the runway lighting, the meeting also agreed to let ONGC operate an independent gate from the Daulat Nagar side of the Juhu airport to its facility.

While the lighting plan was first raised close to eight months ago, talks between AAI and other stakeholders had ended in a stalemate and there were no signs of the work starting off.
