Danger flies into flight path

Bhubaneswar: Social celebrations are the new headache for authorities of the Biju Patnaik International Airport here.

Social events in the airport's Forest Park neighbourhood have robbed the authorities of their sleep as use of fireworks and huge festive balloons are posing a threat to the safety of flights.

The concern comes in the wake of several huge balloons released at a social event held in November 2016 entering the premises of the international airport. This prompted the airport authorities to ask the housing and urban development department to check the recurrence of activities that imperils the security and safety of flights.

"We have noticed several festive balloons, emerging from the Forest Park area and entering into the airport compound, in the evenings during the festive season. These balloons can be dangerous for departing and arriving aircraft," airport director R. Mahalingam said to the state authorities.

He urged the city administration to issue appropriate directions to the officials concerned for exercising caution and avert such incidents in the future. In his letter, Mahalingam said: "Such incidents are also tarnishing the image of the airport. I hope that the local authorities will take action in this regard."

A senior housing and urban development department official said they had received the letter from the airport director and issued directions to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation and police to ensure that no such incident occurred in the future.

"It is a cause for concern as such balloons pose a major risk for aircraft. We had already collaborated with the airport authorities and taken safety measures, such as eviction of slum dwellers, and imposed a ban on the sale of non-vegetarian food around the airport area to avoid incidents of bird hit. We will keep vigil during festive seasons and try to ban balloons as well," the official said.
