Sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Monday busted an operation to smuggle huge quantities of gold jewellery of foreign origin into India through Mangalore International Airport (MIA) by concealing them inside an aircraft.
Acting on specific intelligence, officers of DRI rushed to MIA on Monday morning and thoroughly rummaged the aircraft under suspicion, which arrived at Kenjar as Jet Airways flight 9W531 from Dubai to Mangalore.
After an intensive search operation, officers discovered two black-coloured pouches cleverly concealed underneath the commode in one of the aircraft's rear toilets. Huge quantities of assorted gold ornaments comprising necklaces, bracelets, eardrops, chains with pendants were recovered from these pouches, gross weight of which was found 1,233 grams.
