A month after he flew a solo sortie of MiG 21 within 15 days of taking charge as the IAF Chief, Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa today took indigenous fighter Tejas to skies at the Aero India show. The Air Chief flew a trainer version of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) with AVM AP Singh, who is principal director at NFTC, being his co-pilot during the half an sortie over Yelahanka airbase.
His predecessor Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha was the first IAF chief to fly the home-grown fighter, designed and developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) of the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and built by defence behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL).Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa piloted the aircraft during the 30-minute sortie and conducted deft aerial manoeuvres.The IAF is set to induct 120 Tejas fighters, including 100 of modified versions in its frontline fleet.Tejas, which can fly at 1,350 km per hour, was inducted into the IAF last year.The multi-role supersonic fighter weighs 8.5 tonnes and can carry three tonnes of weapons, including air-to-air missiles.
