Mumbai, Juhu airports unsafe: AAI official

Mumbai: An aviation safety report by a top official of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has revealed several safety hazards at Mumbai airport, but even after three months of the report, no corrective steps have been taken by AAI, which in fact an RTI has revealed is only trying the pass the buck on to Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL).

The aviation safety report compiled by S Mangala, deputy general manager, aviation safety, in AAI’s western region dated October 18, noted a complete breakdown in the safety standards at Mumbai airport and Juhu Aerodrome and claimed that this has rendered operations at both these airports are unsafe.

Mangala, in her report, mentioned that the Mumbai airport operator and AAI (aerodrome operator of the Juhu Airport) are well aware of the obstacles near the facility that render the airports unsafe.

“The possible effect of the ‘degraded performance’ of aircrafts in emergencies has not been taken into consideration by AAI – while conducting aeronautical studies – while approving heights more than the permissible levels for many buildings. Therefore, both Mumbai airport and Juhu aerodrome are unfit for any emergency operations/landings involving aircrafts with degraded performance,” the report said.
