Firecrackers to avoid bird hit ignites fire at SVPI airport runway

Ahmedabad: A major fire was reported at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport in the city. Five fire tenders of the airport authority and four of Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service took around one and half hours to douse the flames.
The incident occurred when the airport staff burnt firecrackers to scare away the birds from the runway to avoid bird-hit before the take -off of airplanes and instead fire caught in dry grass. No damage of property or human life was reported in the incident.
A K Sharma, director of SVPI airport, confirmed the incident and said, "The fire occurred at the operational area of the airport and it was triggered from the dry grass. We have full-fledged fire stations and our own fire department people extinguished the fire. No damage was reported in the FIR."
