Heavy rain reported in the district forced diversion of a Chennai-Madurai flight to Tiruchi on Wednesday.
Airport sources said that the Madurai airport experienced sharp showers since 4.30 p.m. The showers accompanied by thunder and lightning, reduced the visibility in the airport. As a result, the Jet Airways Chennai-Madurai flight, scheduled to land here at 5 p.m. was diverted to Tiruchi airport. However, it later flew again to Madurai after a delay of more than 90 minutes. Similarly, Chennai-Thoothukudi Spicejet flight had to be diverted to Madurai airport at around 3 p.m. following heavy rain in Thoothukudi. It later took off to Thoothukudi after a delay of 3.30 hours at 6.30 p.m.
