HC stops collector from allotting Varsity land to airport body

The Bombay High Court on Thursday restrained the Suburban Collector from considering a proposal forwarded by Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) to allot 40 acres of land to Airport Authority of India at Gorai.

A division bench of Chief Justice Manjulla Chellur and Justice NM Jamdar asked the collector to not allot the land as it is reserved for National Law University. It asked authorities to provide police protection for carrying out survey and demarcation on the land for the University.

Senior Counsel Milind Sathe informed the court that the collector has written a letter to the Vice Chancellor of the University informing that a proposal has been received to allot 40 acres of land out of the 60 acres reserved for the University. This, he said, would yet again delay setting up of a permanent place for the institution, presently operating from a rented premise in Powai.

The bench also took serious note of the issue and said, "We have seen the quality of pass outs from the Bengaluru NLU and we hope the same will be replicated in Mumbai and so the city needs a University."
