A man on board an IndiGo flight from Hyderabad to Delhi, was caught masturbating on Saturday, after a co-passenger sitting beside him complained to the crew.
The man, identified as Rohini resident Ramesh Chand was handed over to the police and arrested after the flight landed in Delhi.
"In her complaint, the woman said she saw the man unzipping his trousers. Then he started masturbating. When the woman brought the matter to a crew member's knowledge, she was allotted another seat. Upon landing, the crew members called up the security, who then handed over the man to the Delhi Police," a senior police officer told DNA.
The DNA report also adds that he was asked to clean himself in the washroom, after which staffers kept a close watch on him till the flight landed.
India Today reported that the man was detained by IndiGo's security staff and later handed over to the Delhi Police, who charged him under Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 345A (sexual harassment) of the IPC.
The only other reported incident of such an act in India, occurred in 2009, also on an IndiGo flight.
At the time, a passenger had reportedly stared at an air hostess on a Delhi-Vadodara and was masturbating in mid-air.
He too, was a resident of Delhi, and was arrested when the flight landed.
In January this year, mass outrage followed after a business class passenger travelling from Mumbai to the US on an Air India flight allegedly groped a female passenger when she fell asleep.
