New Delhi: NGT on Monday took a strong exception to the non-issuance of a circular by DGCA to airlines and ground-handling companies to stop release of human excreta and waste from aircraft tanks mid-air or while landing near IGI airport.
A vacation bench headed by Justice Dalip Singh directed the aviation authority to immediately comply with its order issued in December in this regard, failing which airlines would have to pay an environmental compensation charge of Rs 50,000.
The green panel had also asked DGCA to inform the airlines that it would be subject to surprise inspections to see if the waste tanks were kept empty.
NGT was hearing a plea by Lt Gen Satwant Singh Dahiya (retd) who had sought action against airlines, alleging that human excreta was regularly falling at his residence (near the airport) from aircraft flying over.
