30% runway recarpeting left, airline schedules go for a toss

Bhopal: Air connectivity from Raja Bhoj airport is now likely to improve as runway recarpeting work is being carried out in night for more than a month.
Realising that the recarpeting was hampering flight movement during day time, the work was undertaken in night time since June 1. Air India and Jet Airways are waiting to resume flights, which were stopped after the recarpet work. For 2,447m long runway, the work of recarpeting had started from November 1. When contacted, director of Bhopal airport, Akashdeep Mathur said the work of recarpeting has to be completed in 13 months.
"Of total runway of 2447m, recarpeting work has been completed on 1600m stretch," said Mathur. As to reason for such a long time for completion the work, Mathur said, "That I can't comment." Sources said both Air India and Jet Airways are keen to resume services from Bhopal airport, which were discontinued. Air India had to discontinue the Delhi Airbus 320. "Flight used to run packed owing to the huge traffic. After the flight was discontinued, the aircraft was sent to other routes. We are waiting, it will come back soon," said Vishrut Acharya, Air India manager (MP and Chhattisgarh). He is hoping to get back the flight in the winter schedule.
